Commercial Demolition, Strip Out

At Jim Wise Demolition, we pride ourselves on delivering safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible demolition projects across the UK. Our latest project involved the demolition of Unit 10, Longbenton, Newcastle – formerly the Ruskims Cash & Carry.

Project Overview

The works consisted of a full soft strip and mechanical demolition of the large warehouse facility. From the outset, our priority was to minimise disruption to surrounding businesses and road users while upholding the highest safety and environmental standards.

Site Establishment

The first stage of the project focused on setting up the site safely and securely. This included:

  • Establishing exclusion zones using Heras fencing and clear safety signage.
  • Setting up welfare facilities, including canteen and first aid stations, within the CDM area.
  • Implementing strict traffic management and delivery protocols to keep the site safe and accessible.

Key Project Activities

Our demolition plan followed a clear sequence to ensure maximum safety and efficiency:

  1. Asbestos Removal – All ACMs identified in the refurbishment survey were removed by UKATA-trained operatives.
  2. Soft Strip Works – Non-structural elements, fixtures, and fittings were carefully removed to maximise recycling and prevent contamination.
  3. Internal Panel Removal – Insulated panels, ceilings, and redundant M&E systems were dismantled back to the building’s core shell.
  4. Dust Suppression – A 250-gallon jet wash bowser was used throughout to manage dust and protect operatives and neighbours.
  5. Mechanical Demolition – Using 24-ton excavators fitted with specialist grabs and shears, we safely dismantled the steel frame and processed concrete arisings for re-use.
  6. Recycling & Waste Management – Steel, concrete, and other arisings were segregated and either recycled or reused on site, reducing environmental impact.
  7. Final Site Clearance – Once all works were completed, the site was fully cleared and handed back ready for future development.

Health & Safety Commitment

All works were carried out in strict accordance with BS 6187:2011 (Code of Practice for Demolition) and UK legislation. Daily briefings, toolbox talks, and risk assessments ensured every operative understood the hazards and controls in place. PPE standards, dust/noise/vibration monitoring, and emergency procedures were strictly enforced.

The Outcome

The demolition was completed safely, on schedule, and with minimal disruption to neighbouring properties. With all materials responsibly processed and recycled wherever possible, the site is now cleared and prepared for the next phase of redevelopment.

At Jim Wise Demolition, projects like this highlight our ability to deliver complex industrial demolition works while maintaining our core values of safety, efficiency, and environmental responsibility.
