Data centre decommissioning is one of the most technically specialised forms of commercial strip out. The concentration of high-value, hazardous, and environmentally controlled equipment — together with strict data security requirements — means the standard approach to commercial strip out simply does not apply.
Jim Wise Demolition's data centre demolition service covers everything from single server room strip outs to full data hall demolition, working within the specific operational and security constraints of technology environments.
What Does Data Centre Decommissioning Include?
- IT equipment removal — server racks, switches, storage arrays, and cable management, coordinated with your IT team
- Secure data destruction — degaussing or physical destruction of storage media to NCSC or client standards, with certificates of destruction
- UPS and battery systems — careful removal and specialist disposal of large UPS units and battery banks (hazardous waste)
- Cooling system decommissioning — CRAC units, chillers, and cooling towers; refrigerant recovery by F-gas certified engineers
- Raised floor removal — access floor systems and plenums, including subframe and pedestal removal
- Power infrastructure — PDUs, busbar systems, cable trays, generators, and sub-distribution
- Building fabric strip out — fire suppression, security, monitoring systems, and structural fit-out elements

WEEE and Environmental Compliance
All IT and electrical equipment removed from data centres falls under the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive. A compliant contractor will provide WEEE transfer notes for all equipment and work with approved authorised treatment facilities. Refrigerant gases must be recovered by an F-gas certified engineer. UPS batteries and other hazardous items require specialist hazardous waste disposal with consignment notes.
Security and Access Requirements
Data centres typically require enhanced security protocols for contractor access — DBS-checked personnel, badge access logging, no-photography policies, and in some cases security escort throughout the project. JWD works to client-defined security protocols on every data centre project and can accommodate ISO 27001-compliant working procedures.
Structural Demolition After Decommissioning
Once a data centre has been fully stripped, the structural shell may be demolished or refurbished. Data halls are typically reinforced concrete structures with significant floor loading capacity — the structural demolition or conversion programme should be informed by as-built drawings and a current structural assessment. Jim Wise Demolition can manage the full lifecycle from decommissioning through to cleared plot.
