Our team at Jim Wise Demolition Ltd recently completed a technically challenging and heritage-sensitive demolition project at the Wedgwood Institute in Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent — one of the region’s most iconic Grade II* listed buildings.
Built in the 1860s, the Wedgwood Institute required structural clearance and safety works after the rear parapet and gable wall became unstable. Given the building’s historical importance and its position within a busy conservation area, every stage of the project was planned and executed with the highest level of precision and control.
The rear elevation had suffered structural movement, with roof trusses believed to be pressing against the façade and causing the gable wall to crack and separate.
Our role was to make the building safe, carefully dismantling the unstable masonry while preserving the integrity of the adjoining structures.
All works were undertaken in accordance with BS6187:2011 – Code of Practice for Full and Partial Demolition and under full CDM 2015 compliance.
To manage risk and ensure total control throughout, we implemented:
✅ A high-reach excavator fitted with a rotating grab for accurate material removal
✅ A crane-mounted demolition curtain to protect adjacent façades from falling debris
✅ Dust suppression, vibration monitoring, and strict environmental controls
✅ Banksmen, exclusion zones, and continuous communication across all teams
✅ Daily safety briefings and full PPE compliance for every operative
This method ensured a clean, controlled dismantling process in a confined environment without any damage to the remaining structure.
The unstable sections were safely removed, and the area was left secure, clear, and ready for the next stage of restoration. The project not only prevented further structural deterioration but also protected one of Stoke-on-Trent’s most significant heritage assets. This project showcases our ability to deliver complex commercial demolition within heritage and conservation environments, combining technical skill with careful planning and safety-led execution.
Operating across the Midlands and North West, we are recognised as one of the region’s leading commercial demolition contractors, with extensive experience working on listed, industrial, and public sector buildings.
